Info on ticks and cats
Common questions
What is the best flea and tick medicine for cats?
There are many great safe options for flea and tick treatment and prevention. For cats, options include monthly topicals and monthly chews. Talk with your vet to pick a product that fits your pet’s needs and lifestyle.
Do indoor cats need flea and tick prevention?
Yes! Even indoor-only cats can be at risk for parasites. Fleas and ticks can hitch a ride on any other animal or person to get inside the home. Exposure to internal parasites can occur from eating flies or fleas, being bit by a mosquito, or contacting contaminated debris brought in on shoes. If any pet goes outside, this only increases the chances of contacting one of these pests.
Are flea and tick collars safe for cats?
Not all flea and tick collars are created equal. Cats can be very sensitive to parasite products. Talk to your veterinarian about which products will help keep your cat safe and healthy while protecting against parasites.
How long does a tick stay attached after it starts feeding?
This depends on what species of tick it is. Some types can stay attached for days or even weeks.
